CSS&SB "LITTLE JOE" ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES

GENERAL ELECTRIC RECEIVED AN ORDER IN 1946 FROM THE SOVIET UNION FOR WHAT WERE TO BE 20 OF THE LARGEST ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES EVER BUILT. IN LATE 1948 BEFORE THE ORDER WAS COMPLETED, THE U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT BANNED ALL STRATEGIC SHIPMENTS TO THE U.S.S.R.

THE SOUTH SHORE, THEN SEEKING ADDITIONAL MOTIVE POWER, PURCHASED THREE OF THE RUSSIAN UNITS IN EARLY 1949.

THE SOUTH SHORE LINE ALSO UNDERTOOK THE TASK OF MODIFYING THE

UNITS FOR OPERATION ON THE SOUTH SHORE'S 1,500 VOLT D.C. SYSTEM,

THIS WAS COMPLETED IN LATE 1949.

WEIGHING 273 TONS IN WORKING ORDER, THE DOUBLE-ENDED 2-D+D-2 UNITS WERE 88 ft. 10ins LONG. EIGHT GE-750 TRACTION MOTORS PROVIDED EACH LOCOMOTIVE WITH A CONTINUOUS RATING OF 5,120 H.P. CONTINUOUS TRACTIVE EFFORT WAS 77,000 POUNDS WITH AN HOURLY RATING OF 85,500 POUNDS. THE MAXIMUM SPEED FOR THE LOCOMOTIVES WAS 68 MPH, THE POWER AND GREAT SPEED OF THE THREE ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES WERE IDEAL FOR THE TYPE OF FREIGHT SERVICE THE SOUTH SHORE SPECIALIZED,
